The Heuristics and Biases of Top Managers: Past, Present, and Future

Psychology-grounded research on heuristics and biases in decision making has become increasingly influential the field of management studies. However, although this line inquiry is recognized as a valuable perspective for advancing understanding processes upper echelons firms, extant remains unbalanced, bulk previous endeavours having been focused managerial overconfidence, with insights from more recent dual-process theory ecological rationality conceptions less explored. This introductory article to special issue Journal Management Studies, entitled ‘the top managers: Past, present, future’, offers reflective review prior work addressing its focal theme places articles incorporated into within broader context. In addition, it sets out number directions future work, view inspiring continuing advancement conceptual empirical knowledge practice.
